Yesterday, like most days I came to my classroom, I hugged my students, I laughed with them and I prayed for each one of them. I tried to love on them just a little bit more, so thankful to be a part of their lives. Although my heart was so heavy over the tragedy, I knew I wanted to talk to each of my kiddos about what had happened. I emailed my parents and let them know we would be discussing it and I got 100% positive reaction. Of course, we kept it very kindergarten friendly. At the end of my explanation of a bad man coming to a school in CT and wanting to hurt a lot of kids, I had a huge lump in my throat, I wasn’t even sure I could continue. As I tried to answer questions, I see so many hands raised, one of my student’s response was “We should write them a letter.” Another student’s response was “We should pray for them.” I almost broke into tears…. it wasn’t even my plan to extend this, but I knew God would be pleased seeing these sweet kiddos pour their hearts out onto paper for these families and kids they don’t even know! And so they did, they wrote words that only a sweet, innocent heart could. God be with us all. So we stopped everything we were doing and planning and got to work, here are some letters…. “Dear boys and girls, I hope there’s no more bad people that come to your school.” Doesn’t this just break your heart? I love that I am able to pray with my students over this tragedy. They already know at 5 and 6 years old how important the power of prayer is. Feeling so blessed to have this school, these kids and the staff. God bless you all!
