I absolutely LOVE summer for so many reasons, but THIS is one of my favorites. Indulging in literature is such a calming and enjoyable experience for me and I’m so glad I got to read such great books this month. Let’s get started!
I read this review on Shay’s blog last month and I immediately put it in my Amazon cart and got it right away. I started reading it, and for some odd reason I couldn’t get into it. After taking a moment and stepping away from it, I picked it back up again and I’m so glad I did. I will say, it’s a slow start but once the story gets rollin’, you are completely hooked on this book.
My Oxford Year is about a girl named Ella (from Ohio) who moves to England on a scholarship and studies at Oxford. It is full of surprise and English humor which I found to be charming. But don’t assume this is just another chic-lit love story, you will laugh and you will cry. It is absolutely heart wrenching in a good way. I also heard it may be turned into a movie. Hmmmm.
I don’t know what to say about this book except it is everything. Hannah captured every single thing you want to feel when you pick up a book. It is so well written and heart wrenching that it will leave you speechless. I’m not typically a fan of historical non fiction but this one captures so much love; love for a country, love for a people and love for fighting all that is good. Pick this one and read it, you won’t be disappointed.
Wow! Another one I read from Shay’s post and I’m so glad I read this one. I can’t even begin to tell you how good this memoir is. I’m pretty sure I read this in two days because I couldn’t put it down and every new page had me feeling so many emotions! This memoir is about a cult in the 80’s was extremely fascinating. I will never understand the mindset of a woman who joins a polygamist cult. The mother in this story was so hard for me to understand. Most times she worked very hard and did everything she could for her children, but she failed them when they needed her most. Heartbreaking and riveting. I couldn’t put it down. Ruth was very brave to share her story of fighting for peace and love. Definitely a must read.
The Masterpiece
I have to start by saying my favorite book OF ALL TIME is written by this author. (By the way, if you haven’t read Redeeming Love stop what you’re doing right now and read it. Seriously. Do it.) This book is another book about God’s redeeming love but this one is set in present day. It is so captivating, you won’t want to put it down. It’s about a young girl named Grace who finds herself in a very difficult life position. As she’s trying to get her life back on track she meets this artist named Roman and he also has a very difficult background. It is a book about God’s love in everything and how coming to know the Lord will completely and utterly change. your. life. If you’re a believer read it. If you’re a non believer read it. It will do the same for you. I promise.
Emily Griffin does it again! I absolutely loved this one. Definitely an important one for the social media generation. And one that will have you thinking about it long after you’ve read the last page. Although I didn’t love the ending, that’s life and it sucks but it’s definitely something to think about.
I literally read this in a day. I love Colleen Hoover and she did not disappoint with this one. “When you meet someone who is good for you, they won’t fill you with insecurities by focusing on your flaws. They’ll fill you with inspiration because they’ll focus on all the best parts of you.” I don’t want to give you too much before you read, (it may spoil your opinion) but I will say it’s about a couple that struggles with something MANY couples struggle with and I loved seeing it from the inside. It definitely gave me a new perspective.
This one was a decent domestic thriller. I started to predict the ending but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of this read one bit. I liked to plot, Frances is a stay at home mom with a troubled son. He is having a hard time transitioning to a new school (and so is she) until she makes a friend, Kate. After a fun-loving friendship begins one of them realizes the other woman is not who she says she is. Dun Dun Duuuuuuun!
Well, there you have it friends. All of my reads from this month. I will definitely be taking a little break in August while school is back in session. Hopefully I can get one or two in. I still have a pretty large ‘to be read’ pile but I’d love to hear what you’re reading. Comment below or on my Instagram to let me know what I should put on my list.
