This month I read three thrillers and one historical fiction. And one of them might be on the top of my list of 2020!
So without further ado, here we go!
His & Hers – Feeney takes you on a wild ride with this one! It is most definitely twisted until the very end! You will find yourself saying, “WTH just happened?” The story is is told in three different perspectives, “His” is DCI Jack Harper and “Hers” is Anna Andrews a temporary BBC news presenter filling in for Cat Jones who has been on maternity leave. Then there is a third perspective and if you listen to the audio version you will be creeped the freak out! That voice is spooky, and it will make you shiver. When a Jane Doe is discovered stabbed multiple times in the woods in the village where Anna grew up, they ask her to cover the story. Someone knows more than they are letting on and someone isn’t telling the truth… but who?! 4.5 stars for this one!
Verity – Oh My Goodness! I’m in need of serious counseling after reading this book! 😳 But in all seriousness, I actually loved this one so much! I haven’t read a deep, dark and twisted book like this one in a long time. Let’s talk about the first line… “I hear the crack of his skull before the spattering of blood reaches me.” 😳 😳 I knew right away that I was in for a wicked plot! What a messed up story and jaw-dropping ending! There are many content warnings- child abuse, murder, murder of a child, attempted home abortion, adultery, descriptive fatal pedestrian accident, and very sexually graphic. I told you it was dark and twisted!!!!!! If you like dark and twisted then I highly recommend it but reader beware, you won’t want to put it down! Overall, this book is addictive and impossible to put down. The ending will literally leave you speechless. 🤯 It’s a must read if you’re a fan of a psychological/romance thriller. 5 Stars for another CoHo read.
The Things We Cannot Say – After reading two dark and heavy books I had to change it up and go for a lighter historical fiction. I was in for a surprise… this. book. was. incredible. Probably top 3 of all time. It had all the makings of a beautiful story that will stay with you forever; war, loss, grief, sacrifice and heartache. But mostly HOPE! This was a tough read for sure, while reading about dark times of World War 2, not quite the “light” read I was expecting, but so worth it!
This is the story of Alice, a busy SAHM and her beloved Babcia, who sends her on a journey to Poland for something she doesn’t even know she’s looking for. The story goes back and forth from present time with Alice and 1492 in Europe with Alina. I’m glossing over some of the details because I don’t want to give away too much. But please know that I was totally hooked and I was taken away at the end. Actual tears fell and I know this one will stay with me for a long time! The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced…and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it. Definitely 5 stars!
The Housekeeper – I hate to say it, but I didn’t really care for this one that much. It was “meh”. I really hated the main character Claire, she was revolting and I couldn’t see passed her wicked scheming. The twist at the end did surprise me and it wasn’t a boring story but it was just a mediocre thriller for me. Here’s the plot, Claire is a 24 year old struggling adult that scams people just to get by. One day Claire sees a woman from her past that she feels has wronged her. Through her scamming and devious ways she tracks down the woman’s new name and decides she’s going to frame her. So basically she poses as her housekeeper and plots to force her enemy to confess about what she did ten years ago. It really is a decent storyline but it just didn’t have me completely convinced. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you read this one. This one is a 3 star thriller.
