Hello Bookish friends, I’m so glad you’re here! I can’t wait to share my latest reads with you. This month was a mix of fun Halloween, creepy serial killers, and dark academia. If any of these sound interesting stick around to read my thoughts and possibly get a new one for your bookshelf.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches
This was an adorable and cozy book that is perfect to read on a cold, autumn night. This was a little about romance and more about friendship, found family, and love in all forms. It was just the right amount of magic and humor and felt like a warm hug.
Adorable witch Mika Moon has been taught her entire life to hide her magic and stay away from other witches to avoid drawing attention to her magic. All in good fun, she posts videos on her social media pretending to be a witch, assuming no one will buy it. Until one day she receives a message that someone is onto her. They ask her to come to Nowhere House to teach three young witches to control their magic.
It breaks all the rules, but Mika goes anyway. She travels in the “broomstick” and brings along her adorable dog, Circe and her koi fish, Hecate, Freyja, Medusa, and Ceridwen. Once she arrives she immediately falls into step with the caretakers and young witches and the handsome, yet prickly librarian Jamie.

Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match
I was very excited when I saw this title released by Sally Thorne. I truly loved the Hating Game so I expected to love this one as well. It was perfect for the spooky season…. but it wasn’t one of my favorites.
It had a cute premise, had me engaged for the most part but it fell a little flat… even if you suspend belief to get into this story.
Angelika Frankenstein wants a love match. She’s been looking for the man of her dreams, with no luck. Men find her odd, too clever, and pretty, Angelika works with her brother on his experiments to bring men back to life. This time, she creates a project of her own. And she is successful. The perfect man who she immediately loves awakens, but things are not all well. Her creation has no memory but is determined to discover who he is. At the same time, another man comes into her life, making her question whether her perfect creation is what she needs or whether there is something lacking in inventing the ideal man.

Blindsighted
This has been on my shelf for about a year and after a sub-par romance, I wanted to dig into a dark, thriller from one of my favorite authors Karin Slaughter! This did not disappoint. It was everything I love in a thriller; dark, multi-layered, and suspenseful. If you love following detective work and forensics this one is for you, but be prepared for the graphic violence, it’s not for the faint of heart.
Sara is a pediatrician and works part-time as a coroner. This work puts her directly in contact with her ex-husband, Jeffrey, a man she has a complicated history and with whom she still carries a torch.
But, when Jeffrey’s deputy, Lena, loses her sister in a very violent way, it stirs up bad memories for Sara and forces her to work up-close and personal with Jeffrey while they try to put a killer behind bars.

If We Were Villains
I don’t know much about theater but if you do, you will LOVE THIS mystery! This one was based on a Shakespeare drama and
The degree to which the character dynamics affect this plot is just so so amazing. These characters are so well-written and you love to hate them, they are all actors of course.
This is a Shakespearean tragedy and on some level, we know how it ends. But it is completely impossible to get off the tracks.
“But that is how a tragedy like ours or King Lear breaks your heart—by making you believe that the ending might still be happy, until the very last minute.”

Creep
Woah, this was a good one! A psychological thriller that checks all the boxes; lies, murder, sex, obsession, addiction, love, and self-pity.
It starts, with a psych professor, Sheila Tao who is trying to end an affair with her student/assistant, Ethan Wolf. The problem is, Ethan didn’t see why it had to end. So he begins to stalk Sheila and threatens to expose their affair by posting some suggestive photos that would end her career. Then Ethan disguises himself to learn more about Morris, Sheila’s fiance, which opens up another can of worms! This one is so good, you will not want to put it down!

Freak
So, after reading Creep I had to get this one immediately. Without giving too much away, I’ll just say this one was just as dark and disturbing as the first.
It was an excellent read and I highly recommend this series. This second book introduces a few new characters and doesn’t necessarily have to be read after the first one, but you won’t want to miss these books.
