As the school year wraps up I am so excited for summer vacation! But then I realize all the days in between… at home… with the kids. So I like to set up a schedule for the kids (and myself) so we can stay productive and still enjoy our time at home.
Once our routine is set I like to talk to the kids about possible ideas for summer break. I allow them to brainstorm, with me, some things that they would like to do over summer break. Here’s our ideas…
Once we have a good list going, Zach and I start to narrow down which of the activities are possible (like go on a road trip) and which are not (like visiting the Eiffel Tower). We create a list of things that we would like to accomplish with the kids. We also (loosely) organize when those events will happen. For instance, we know “build a sandcastle” will happen on our trip to Florida this summer. Then we also add random and FREE activities like a movie night or family sleepover for those times that we aren’t doing something crazy, like “ride a rollercoaster”. That way we are constantly adding checks on our list and feeling like we are doing a TON of fun stuff!

I tried to add as many “free” activities as I could but we are going to get creative and do our best.
My family thrives on routine and scheduling. Don’t get me wrong we can really take advantage of a lazy Tuesday- but when it turns into a “lazy two weeks” we’re all in trouble. This little schedule keeps my kids on task and using their brains not just their eyes for screens. They earn time for tv and iPads but first, their day is filled with learning, creativity, chores and words of affirmation. I realize every family is different but I hope to bring some organization to yours if you need it. If you’d like to download your own schedule click here. Now that the kids have an idea of what to look forward to, I like to give them standards to keep them responsible.
